TITUS ANDRONICUS was the single most popular play in Shakespeare's theatre during his lifetime (and may actually have been his first play). Today it is considered one of his bloodiest and is rarely performed. However, this sordid tale of revenge, political turmoil, incest, rape, and unthinkable brutality could be ripped from the headlines of today's newspapers.

The play, different in style from much of Shakespeare's work, takes its inspiration from the Senecan Tragedy of Ancient Rome, the gory theater that was played to bloodthirsty circus audiences between gladiatorial combats. It is an action-packed drama with similarities to a modern-day slasher film - with murders, mutilations and a scene of cannibalism that would do Sweeney Todd and Hannibal Lecter proud.

"Today's audiences feed daily on tabloid sex scandals, teenage gang rape, high-school gun sprees, and the private details of a celebrity murder trial," Julie Taymor, director of a movie based in the play, has noted. "The ferocious, cynical and wickedly witty voice of young Shakespeare has created a condemning dissertation on this addiction to violence."
